With most crews recovering from too much sailing/drinking (delete as appropriate) at the National Championships the week before, Saturday only saw two Sonatas competing, setting up a grand match race between Screwloose and Skipper. Screwloose tacked on top of Skipper with 20 seconds to the start and pulled away during a foul-tide beat down Heartbreak Reach, unfortunately leaving Skipper with few options beyond following in dirty air. The race consisted of three windward/leeward (ish) legs on Gillingham Reach in ideal conditions, giving both boats plenty of opportunities to practice spinnaker hoists and drops. Without any cake on board to distract the crew, Screwloose extended for a comfortable win, although their celebrations were cut short when, upon crossing the finish line, they promptly went aground in front of a large audience on St Mary’s Island.
